Two-at-a-Time Toe Up Socks- October 2, 16, & 30
Instructor: Doris Lewis
Dates: Tuesdays, October 2, 16, & 30
Time: 5:30– 8:00p
Skill Level: Intermediate
Skills needed: Knit, purl, increase with kfb, experience knitting in the round, previous sock knitting experience will be helpful.
Skills taught: Turkish cast-on, Knitting with Magic Loop, Fish Lips Kiss Heel, Sewn Bind-off
300 – 400 yards of fingering weight or sock yarn or 220 – 350 yards of DK weight yarn. A yarn with a bit of nylon or acrylic will wear better than 100% wool. Separate a single skein into two equal balls.
Needles: One circular needle at least 40 inches in length. If you are using sock yarn, the recommended size should work well; typically U.S. Size 1.5 (2.5mm) or U.S. Size 2 (2.75mm). If using yarn other than one made especially for socks, choose a needle at least one size smaller than recommended. The key here is that a tighter gauge will make sturdier, longer-lasting socks.
Other: Piece of cardboard for making a foot tracing, tapestry needle
Pattern:You will need to purchase the “Fish Lips Kiss Heel” pattern. It is available on Ravelry.com.
With a few key measurements and some simple calculations, you can make a pair of socks using only a basic outline for a pattern from any yarn of your choosing. These “vanilla” socks will be knit from the toe up using the Magic Loop Technique, thus avoiding the dreaded “second sock syndrome”. Once you know the basics, you will be able to knit socks using your choice of stitch patterns. The heel construction for this sock is the “Fish Kiss Heel”, a generic heel construction that can be used on any sock whether knit toe up or cuff down.
If you are a fairly new to sock knitting, I suggest using a DK (or heavier) weight yarn along with the appropriate needle size. The use of a heavier yarn will make reading your knitting much easier. However, heavier yarn will make a “fatter” sock perhaps more suited as slippers.
Prior to the first class, please follow steps 1 – 7 of the Fish Kiss Lips pattern and make a template of the foot of the recipient of your knitted pair of socks. Bring this template to class with you.
