Two-at-a-Time Toe Up Socks- September 12, 19, & 26
Instructor: Doris Lewis
Dates: Tuesdays, September 12,19, & 26
Time: 6:00p – 8:00p
Skill Level: Intermediate
Skills needed: Knit, purl, increase with kfb, some experience knitting in the round, having previously taken the Top Down Custom Fit Socks class or other previous sock experience is helpful but not essential.
Skills taught: Turkish cast-on, Fish Lips Kiss Heel, sewn bind-off
300 – 400 yards of fingering weight or sock yarn or 220 – 350 yards of DK weight yarn. A yarn with a bit of nylon or acrylic will wear better than 100% wool.
Needles: Two circular needles at least 24 inches in length. If you are using sock yarn, the recommended size should work well. If using yarn other than one made especially for socks, choose a needle one size smaller than recommended. The key here is that a tighter gauge will make sturdier, longer-lasting socks.
Other: Piece of cardboard for making a foot tracing, tapestry needle
Pattern: You will need to purchase the “Fish Lips Kiss Heel” pattern. It is available for $1.00 on Ravelry.
With a few key measurements, a gauge swatch, and some simple calculations, you can make a pair of socks using only a basic outline for a pattern from any yarn of your choosing. These socks will be knit from the toe up on two circular needles two-at-a-time, thus avoiding the dreaded ‘second sock syndrome’. Once you know the basics, you will be able to knit socks using your choice of stitch patterns. The heel construction for this sock is the “Fish Kiss Heel”, a generic heel construction that can be used on any sock whether knit toe up or cuff down.
Additional Information: Prior to the first class, please follow steps 1 – 7 of the Fish Kiss Lips pattern and make a template of the foot of the recipient of your knitted pair of socks. Bring this template to class with you.
