If you know how to cast on and are comfortable with the knit stitch, then you can make this hat!

Worked flat and seamed at the end, it makes for a quick and interesting hat construction that will stand out in a crowd.  The shaping comes from working short rows—we’ll be exploring two methods for achieving this easy shaping technique, so no prior short row experience is necessary.  This pattern is also a great way to dip your toe into color changes, choosing your own color combos, and exploring your own creativity. Go for subtlety or choose bold options.

Students may use straight or circular needles for this class—whichever is more comfortable for you.

Materials

“Tychus” pattern by Brooke T. Higgins, available free on Knitty.com (provided in class)

Worsted weight yarn, approximately 300 yds total (150 of each color in a two color hat).

Size 9 needles—or size needed to obtain gauge

Tapestry needle

Stitch markers (optional)

Gauge 15 sts/28 rows (14 garter ridges) = 4 in in garter stitch

Students should come to class with at least one ball of yarn they’d like to work with, and preferably with a gauge swatch worked up.  We’ll discuss how to measure and count stitches in garter stitch and choosing additional colors as a part of the first class if you’re unsure how to go about it!
