Custom Fit Top Down Socks - March 5, 12, and 19
Instructor: Judie Hershey
Date: Tuesday, March 5, 12, and 19
Skill Level: Intermediate
In this class you will learn to make a pair of socks, using any yarn. With a few key measurements, a gauge swatch, and a few calculations, you can make a pair of socks without a pattern. Our socks will be knit from the top down on double-pointed needles. Although we will be making socks in plain stockinette stitch, using the skills learned in this class, you will be able to knit socks using nearly any stitch pattern that you like.
Skills learned in this class include making a gauge swatch, a little bit of math (nothing scary!), picking up stitches, and the dreaded Kitchener stitch. (It really isn’t that difficult!) Experience with double-pointed needles is preferred but not required.
Homework: Prior to the first class, have a gauge swatch completed with the yarn and needles you have chosen. You will want a swatch of about 4" x 4" in stockinette stitch, in the round. Here is and handy link to a YouTube video: How to swatch in the round.
- Pattern is included
- Approx 4 oz of whatever yarn you want to use. Something with a bit of nylon or acrylic will wear better than 100% wool. If you have never made socks before, you may want to consider DK weight yarn.
- A set of 5 double-pointed needles one size smaller than recommended size for your yarn. (If you are using yarn made especially for socks, the recommended needle size is probably appropriate.)
- Stitch markers and a row counter are helpful, but optional.
Note: The cost of the class does not include materials or patterns so these must be purchased separately. We are more than happy to help you choose the proper materials listed for each class for which you will receive a 10% discount. Please be sure to make your purchases prior to class to avoid any delay in start time.
Class descriptions will include experience level and provide instructions for any homework that needs to be completed prior to class. Please come prepared since there will not be time during class to catch up on homework. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding homework.
